The intended readers are your audience. An essay usually isn't written to entertain, it isn't a stand up routine! So we can eliminate A. B doesn't have anything to do with the audience. As far as D goes, we have no idea if the essay is an instructional piece, so we can eliminate it. THE ANSWER IS C :)
